After days of heavy rain #YakushimaWeddingRingsStories

After days of heavy rain, the sun is finally out.

It feels like it’s been ages since I last looked up at the sky.

It felt so good to take in the sunlight with my whole body.

While it was raining, I had been shaping small leaves from a sheet of platinum.

I was trying to give them an organic, gentle feel.

I also made several small rose gold dots in different sizes.

It warmed up quickly once the sun came out.

With a clear sense that summer is quietly approaching, I’m here at my workbench again today.

I guess there are more than fifteen points where the metals need to be joined.

I had to be as careful as possible not to melt the metal with a flame hotter than intended.

Little by little, I’m adding subtle touches.

I could feel time moving more slowly than usual inside the studio.

Harmony between engagement and wedding rings #YakushimaWeddingRingsStories

Harmony between engagement and wedding rings #YakushimaWeddingRingsStories

It has been almost four years since I made their engagementrings.

They sent me a message from California asking for new custom pieces.

I still vividly remember his bimetal ring and her flower ring.

This April, we finally met for the first time in Kyoto.

They were visiting Japan on their honeymoon, and we talked about their wedding bands.

She handed me her engagement ring in person.

Now, I am crafting her wedding band to pair harmoniously with the engagement ring.

For this ring, we chose the same material as the engagement ring. I’m now crafting it in 18k rose gold (called pink gold in Japan), with delicate, organic lines.

The natural beauty of Yakushima always shows me the form each object is meant to take.

When I placed two rings together,  they were already in harmony.

It’s still a work in progress, but I can picture how beautiful the final piece will be.

The lilies are in beautiful bloom, and the mountains hold thick clouds gently, as if cradling something precious.

Today as well, I keep on building the ring, little by little, bit by bit.

Bringing Nature’s Softness into Metal — Crafting the Leaf Engagement Ring

Between spring and summer, there’s a small, lovely season we cherish in Japan.

For about a month, it has been raining almost all day, every day—we call this wet season “Tsuyu”.

Especially here on Yakushima Island, where I live, the rain can be so heavy that I can’t even leave the house.

The air turns cool and thick with moisture. And under this rain, the plants seem to glow with joy. The green becomes so deep and beautiful.

I love spending time in the studio during this remarkable season on Yakushima.

I feel like the perfect time to begin making her wedding band, inspired by the rhythm of the seasons.

I began by preparing a platinum plate, specially blended for her.

Then, I struck its surface with a hammer, using quite a bit of force.

I repeated the process many times until the platinum began to take on a rough and organic texture.

I worked the hard platinum with a hard hammer, giving it a soft and quiet texture.

I’m trying to capture the gentle touch that plants naturally have.

The rain stops for a moment, and I step out into the garden.

The hydrangeas have started to bloom in their usual spot—for the first time in a year.

There are puddles here and there, making it a bit hard to walk.

The evening rain is cool and feels good.

Soon enough, the rain began to fall again, so I returned to the workshop.

And this is how our ring-making journey begins.
